You know how to read perfectly well, but can you decipher that fine print written on the back of the box of the cosmetic product you just bought?
Yes, we completely agree – it’s boring and the tiny letters are torturous to read. But, we think it’s so important to know what you’re applying to your skin. You’re already doing this for the food you eat: you select the best food for your health in specialized stores. Now, try to exercise this caution when choosing what you put on the delicate organ that covers your entire body.
We’d like to give you some advice that will surely make it simpler for you to read the information on your cosmetics.
According to international regulations for cosmetics labels, the formula ingredients must appear in descending order, in other words, the raw material that appears first on the list is what is present in the largest quantity in the product.
The surprise comes when you compare the marketing slogan for the soap with the list ingredients – in fine print – and you realize that your soap “made from lavender” hardly even contains this ingredient that they mention with such delight in large letters on the packaging. And don’t be fooled by words such as “natural”, “organic” and “eco”; cosmetics manufacturers are marketing experts, too, and they are aware that healthy is trendy and sells very well. We agree – bad practice is irresponsible but that’s how they do it.
We bet now you’re wondering, how do I know if the ingredients are really natural? Don’t worry, you don’t need to sign up for chemistry or Latin courses. As consumers, consistency and logic will save us from the products that hide under the guise of being healthy when in reality they are not. Still don’t feel ready to face that fine print? Let’s look at it like a game.
Come on, don’t be scared, BUTYLPHENYL METHYLPROPIONAL… would you guess that’s something natural or chemical? And what would you say about the word LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA??
See? Just use some commons sense and intuition and you’ll see how it helps.
If this hasn’t convinced you, we’ll share our golden rule with you: if there’s something you can’t pronounce on the label, don’t buy it!
Now you’re ready for the #READTHELABEL challenge! Start paying attention to what you choose to feed to your skin – it’s just as important as what you feed your body.
